Today's test subject is an ASRock K7S8XE motherboard. ASRock are a fairly new company, at least to our shores anyway; although they have had boards on sale in the US for a while now they have only recently started to appear in UK stores. However, just because you may have not heard of them before don't discount them from your want lists just yet as they have received some good reviews, particularly getting good marks for stability. Also, when I tell you that they are a subsidiary of Asus you may start to take notice. Finally, they're very reasonably priced. The board up for review is a mere £45 and when you see the amount of features packed in you'll see why that price is so good.
Of course a good value board isn't exactly good value if it doesn't perform so today we'll find out if the K7S8XE is a great buy or only one for those on a tight budget. Let's dig in.......
...
Well the board has been in use for a while now and I have had no major problems. It has been really stable, and fast, especially when the price is taken into account. I am more than happy with the features, the cable modem is now connected through the LAN and is happily chugging away. There has been no need for any BIOS updates, which are often required on new boards, especially those with new chipsets to iron all the kinks out of, so that's good. The soundcard is not of the same standard as the one included on nForce 2 boards but it has had no problems and is in most cases more than adequate.
As I mentioned before this board will probably not appeal to some people planning or already using a modded case as it's very plain vanilla, and likewise for those looking to overclock as there are not many options. That said, for those looking for a good, stable and feature packed board on a budget you can't go far wrong with the K7S8XE.
All in all I'd say that whilst it may not suit all, the ASRock K7S8XE is a great board at a great price and probably one of the best boards at this pricepoint.
